    Google

News- Google is launching a blog finding service- Link here not sure what this will mean for me (or anyone else) - I am sure someone will fill me in....

    Mona Lisa

Check this out mona lisa constructed entirely of rubics cubes- who are these people????? don't they have anything to do with their lives other than this? and why on earth did they suddenly think- I know what I am missing in my life- a mona lisa made entirely from rubics cubes.

    Why, why why?

    doctors and nurses

This article has made me annoyed. As someone who knows quite a few doctors, I know that they are constantly frustrated by patients who think that they know more about medicine than they do. Many have had patients (completely wrongly!) complaining that the doctor didn't prescribe this or that drug (because it worked so well for their friend Maud) and that the doctor doesn't know what they are doing because they are giving chest x-rays to children who are vomiting (pneumonia is a common reason for young children vomiting) etc.

It is a fact that the most any of us really know about our bodies and how they work was probably gained from year 12 biology and did not extend into university. Very few of us have studied medicine, and even fewer have gained postgraduate qualifications that allow us specialise. Therefore, very few of us are actually in any position to judge a doctors competence or incompetence. This is why medical review boards are there- because the government recognises that you must be highly trained in this area to pass judgement. 'Consumer sites' for doctors are clearly unfair as it does not allow for doctors to defend themselves.

Now before you jump up and down and say that there is a similar situation on consumer websites about products etc. remember- Doctors are people- you wouldn't like it if there were websites (administered by people who had no idea about your line of business) slagging you off and saying you were incompetent without any substantiation either.

I think a little less slandering and a little more trust is required here. I understand that some doctors are incompetent and their licenses should be revoked but trial by media (which this, in effect is) is unfair on all levels, particularly where the person being dragged through the mud isn't even asked their opinion.

Or maybe I am just watching a bit too much MDA!

    Post Secret

Everyone I know is reading this blog- even the people who don't really know what blogs are. It is slightly disturbing at times and quite dark but I have to keep reading it just to see what happens next. Can't figure out how to subscribe to it though.

    If Goths ruled the earth

This is quite an interesting site- has photoshop entries from a whole group of people for a 'if goths ruled the world' exhibition- an example: A gothic ronald macdonald

    IKEA

Crazy stuff- according to Boing Boing Ikea are building some flat pack houses in Ireland. Now, I don't know about you guys, but I see a bit of a flaw in this plan. Anyone who has ever tried to assemble anything from Ikea knows that it is not usually as easy as it seems. I was once reduced almost to tears over a simple shelving unit which came in an (allegedly) easy-to-assemble flat pack. I don't even want to think about what assembling a whole house would be like. Also I don't think I would want to live in a house put together entirely with an allen key- call me crazy.

That said, I love Ikea- when they come to Adelaide I will be extremely excited.

    Captain Planet

I grew up watching this show, but unbeknownest to me, the voices were an all-star cast. Gaia (the godlike woman who was always telling them what to do) was voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, Dr Blight was Meg Ryan and Zarm was (wait for it...) STING. I was shocked.

    songs that suck

This blog makes me laugh. This entry in particular was very funny... I've always hated this song too which makes it a lot funnier.

while we are on the subject, my least favourite songs are as follows:

    1. Definitely of all time- Europe, the final countdown. I don't think that I will ever in my life find a song I HATE as much as this one. I think that part of that hate comes from the fact that I used to work at the football and they played it at the beginning of the game, the end of each quarter and at least a few times at the end of the game. ARRGGHH it makes me angry just thinking about it... so I will stop.
    2. that stupid one by bachelor girl about walking under a bus and getting hit by a train, keeps falling in love and can't understand... the title will come to me eventually
    3. Get Right - in fact most of JLo's songs, particularly those that came after her name change TO JLo
    4. Shaddupa your face- I was recently reminded of this song by Spicks and Specks on ABC- thanks guys

There you go- not nearly as funny or as clever, but I got it off my chest.

    Parents who praise too much

"Some psychologists and authors are backtracking on their earlier directives to praise, praise, praise. They say overpraising creates overinflated egos, not positive self-esteem. It also overly protects children from experiencing conflict and failure. It’s something to think about as another school year begins.

Among those making a U-turn is Florida State University psychology professor Roy Baumeister, who for 30 years attempted to document the value of positive self-esteem, only to experience “one of the biggest disappointments of my career.” "

The last sentence is a bit ironic- however, definitely worth a read. Made me think about how frustrated I always was as a child at school when we played games where everybody won. I suppose it would be a fairly obvious conclusion that 'overpraising creates overinflated egos' but it didn't seem to occur to the child psychologists propounding the "praise your child to build high self esteem" angle

    Gore Vidal

It's funny how you can hear a lot about someone in the public eye and recognise their name- and not really know what they stand for.... terrible I know but I never actually knew anything about Gore Vidal until I found this interview while trawling through the radio national website looking for something completely different. I am very ashamed to admit overlooking GV as I did do a minor in politics at uni- Asian politics though which he doesn't really talk about much. I have therefore decided to find some more out about him- his opinions on Timothy McVeigh are interesting although not being an expert in this area, it is impossible for me to say whether they are founded in fact or theory. I will look into it. hmmmmm

    Japanese sand animation

This is great- animation using only sand on a glass plate- used in a couple of Japanese commercials- such as this one . A longer video is available here showing the process. Interesting!

    Toaster Museum

Nothing is quite so satisfying than a random site found on the web- This one was courtesy of the fabulous people at boing boing - a real life(well cyber actually) toaster toy museum. The photo is of a toaster shaped notepad

    Emily's first Blog

This is the new space for the random things that live in my head- I am doing it to stop my addiction for sending links around to everybody I know with random things in them that I think will interest them. This way it will save me time.

The URL for this blog is quite obscure- it was actually the original name of my favourite band Pulp before they became famous. It has no relationship with anything that is actually on the blog- but I thought it was an interesting fact.
